For all of you Ron Perlman enthusiasts, never fear, he will actually star in another title besides Hellboy. It almost never happened, but Hellboy 2 will begin production in the upcoming year, led by your boy Perlman as the big, red horny devil with one arm bizarrely bigger than the other. We never did understand that.
The sequel, entitled The Golden Army, will once again pin Hellboy and the rest of the BPRD (Bureau for Paranormal Defense and Research) against a crew of mythological entities' who want to take back earth from the smelly humans. Further explored will also be Hellboy's relationship with fire throwing hottie Liz Sherman will they learn to coexist?
Selma Blair will be back to play Sherman, Jeffrey Tambor will return to. Doug Jones, who will also be playing the Silver Surfer in the upcoming Fantastic Four sequel, will also return as the amphibious Abe Sapien. Jones will get another stab at voicing his own character this time around in the first installment, Frasier's David Hyde Pierce was called in to make Sapien sound edumacated.
Director Guillermo Del Toro has revealed that the film is in production, monsters are being created, and the release date will be sometime in 2008. Del Toro also claims that Number Two should be followed by Number Three. If only he can think of something for Hellboy to battle.
'I must say that I'm having a great experience right now at Universal, because I find that their understanding of Hellboy as a possibility is so great, says Del Toro. 'My hope is that if everything goes well and we continue [the franchise], Hellboy can start fighting the Universal monsters! I would love to see that. [Hellboy creator Mike] Mignola, when we closed the deal with Universal, we both looked at each other and just said, 'Frankenstein!'
Unlike previous movies which explored the classic characters in updated, supped-up interpretations (Van Helsing), Del Toro would like to battle with the monsters of their original inspirations ala Karloff/Lugosi/Chaney Jr. He's so excited about the idea, he claims that even if Hellboy 3 doesn't pan out, he'd love to have the Universal monsters in a different medium - perhaps an animated universe.
The sky is the limit for the Del Toro-Hellboy-Universal marriage. "I would love to go on the Universal Monsters ride, says the director. 'I would love to go on the Hellboy ride! And finally Del Toro's true inspiration is revealed.
